Easing Colds and Influenza Naturally with Essential Oils

Overview

Easing Colds and Influenza Naturally with Essential Oils

Author: Tiffany Boutwell, HHP, NC and Debbie Gordon, RN

Viruses causing colds and influenza are a serious threat to public health, especially given their nature to spread quickly and easily. Up to 20% of Americans will experience the flu annually, and over 200,000 will be hospitalized as a result of flu-related complications. It is estimated that adults will suffer from at least two colds per year. Combined, colds and flu burden our healthcare system. Because of their viral nature, they are difficult to treat. Because of this, and because patients are often unsatisfied with standard medical treatment, there is a strong need for complementary and alternative medicine approaches for these conditions.

Overview

In this protocol, lemon and melaleuca are used internally and aromatically, being inhaled to help reduce symptoms including excessive mucus, nasal congestion, postnasal drip, and sore throat as well as to eliminate viruses and bacteria. Peppermint oil is also used to help reduce nasal congestion. Chronic cold and flu suffers make want to take additional steps, using a Monthly Migraine Focus and use other suggested products monthly to help decrease cold or flu frequency and severity.  This includes diffusing wild orange oil, frankincense, and protective essential oil blend* to help strengthen the immune system, restore health at a cellular level, and eliminate environmental threats. For long-term wellness, the protocol also recommendsprobiotic supplements** and Longevity Supplements*** daily in addition to protective blend beadlets**** and greens supplement mix.*****

* OnGuard Protective Blend (contains Wild Orange Peel, Clove Bud, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus Leaf/Stem, and Rosemary Leaf/Flower essential oils)

** PB Assist+ Probiotic Defense Formula

Author's Preliminary Clinical Observations

“I have not used medications since I started using oils and truly feel that I have what I need to care for my family! When my children go back to school and during Flu season, we have had great success using the Protective Essential Oil Blend* products including the beadlets and oil. Lemon in water throughout the day has helped to keep our immune systems strong and combines well with oregano and melaleuca when steamed and inhaled to get rid of viruses. Peppermint to drive the oils in deeper and open the airways helps to relieve congestion, so it works well with the lemon, oregano and melaleuca inhalation. My rule of thumb and advice to all is small amounts, more  frequently.” -Debbie Gordon, RN

Background Research Article Summaries and Discussion

Essential oils such as melaleuca, oregano, and oils found in the protective essential oil blend^ are widely used in alternative medicine for viral illnessesincluding influenza due to their chemical compounds that exhibit antiviral properties, including inhibiting the entry of the virus in the host. Menthol found in peppermint along with eucalyptus^^have been found to promote respiratory health and studies have demonstrated this may be due to an anti-inflammatory effect that improves nasal air flow as well as plant constituents that improve mucus clearance. Peppermint and eucalyptus have also been shown to mitigate cold and flu symptoms such as sore throat and cough when compared to placebo. Essential oils are a viable treatment option for many cold and flue sufferers who have otherwise found no relief or do not wish to medicate.

In a double-blind, randomized controlled trial of infants born at full term with various critical illnesses, 50 infants were supplemented for eight days after birth with probiotics^^^ three times daily and the other 50 infants receiving only a placebo, it was determined that there was a significantly reduced rate of nosocomial pneumonia (18% in probiotic group vs 36% in placebo group) and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (6% in probiotic group vs 16% in placebo group) without any incidence of adverse effects.(Wang, Y., et al. Efficacy of probiotic therapy in full-term infants with critical illness. Asia Pac J Clin Nutr. 2014;23(4):575-80. doi: 10.6133/apjcn.2014.23.4.14.ABSTRACT)

A bioactive component of melaleuca essential oil, terpinen-4-ol, was found to inhibit the entry of the influenza virus in the host in vitro by combining with the membrane fusion site of haemagglutinin.(Li, X, et al. Melaleuca alternifolia concentrate inhibits in vitro entry of influenza virus into host cells. Molecules. 2013 Aug 9;18(8):9550-66. doi: 10.3390/molecules18089550. ABSTRACT)

Influenza virus infectivity was stifled by Protective Blend Essential Oil^^ in a dose-dependent manner, with the number of nascent viral particles released from MDCK cells being reduced by 90% when treated with 1:4,000 dilution and by 40% when virus was treated with 1:6,000 dilution. The number of infected MDCK cells decreased by 90% when virus was treated with 1:2,000 dilution and 45% when treated with 1:3,000 dilution, believed to be because of the inhibition of viral protein translation.(Wu, S., et al. Protective essential oil attenuates influenza virus infection: an in vitro study in MDCK cells. BMC Complement Altern Med. 2010 Nov 15;10:69. doi: 10.1186/1472-6882-10-69. ABSTRACT)

Terpinen-4-ol, the main active component in melaleuca essential oil, was found to inhibit viral activity against influenza A/PR/8 virus subtype H1N1 at doses below the cytotoxic level.(Garozzo, A., et al. In vitro antiviral activity of Melaleuca alternifolia essential oil. Lett Appl Microbiol. 2009 Dec;49(6):806-8. doi: 10.1111/j.1472-765X.2009.02740.x. Epub 2009 Sep 18. ABSTRACT)

In an effort to demonstrate the antiviral activities of oregano oil, it was determined that oregano oil and carvacrol, the main active component of oregano oil, were effective in acting directly upon the virus capsid and subsequently the RNA, inactivating nonenveloped murine norovirus (MNV), the virus used in the study.(Gilling, D.H., et al. Antiviral efficacy and mechanisms of action of oregano essential oil and its primary component carvacrol against murine norovirus.J Appl Microbiol. 2014 May;116(5):1149-63. doi: 10.1111/jam.12453. Epub 2014 Feb 12.ABSTRACT)

Studies suggest that the essential oils of Eucalyptus citriodora,^^^ Eucalyptus globulus and Mentha piperita among others demonstrate anti-inflammatory properties which may have a direct effect on the respiratory tract including the coughing reflex and the airflow in nasal passages.(Rakover, Y., Ben-Arye, E., and Goldstein, L.H. The treatment of respiratory ailments with essential oils of some aromatic medicinal plants. Harefuah. 2008 Oct;147(10):783-8, 838.ABSTRACT)

Lavender, menthol, and eucalyptus oil^^^ cause an increase in ciliary beat frequency in human nasal epithelium. The effect was stronger with a 0.2% concentration than a 2.0% concentration.5 In another study, antioxidant components of naturally occurring oils containing limonene, pinene, and cineole (also found in lavender, lemon, and peppermint essential oils) improve nasal mucociliary clearance as well as nasal patency in patients with chronic rhinitis. (Riechelmann, H., et al.Response of human ciliated respiratory cells to a mixture of menthol, eucalyptus oil and pine needle oil. Arzneimittelforschung, 1997. 47(9): p. 1035.ABSTRACT)

A throat spray containing eucalyptus,^^^ peppermint and other essential oils showed a significant improvement in sore throat, hoarseness and cough compared to placebo. (Ben-Arye, E., et al., Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections in primary care: a randomized study using aromatic herbs. Evid Based Complement Alternat Med, 2011. 2011: p. 690346.  ABSTRACT* PDF)

D-limonene, found in lemon oil has been shown to inhibit immune cells from producing inflammatory molecules. (Lappas, C.M. and N.T. Lappas, D-Limonene modulates T lymphocyte activity and viability. Cell Immunol, 2012. 279(1): p. 30-41.ABSTRACT)

When to seek a medical professional for treatment:

If after 3-5 days of the Self-Administered Protocol you are still experiencing Cold and Flu, or are having associated symptoms, then consider taking cold medications including nasal decongestants, pain relievers and prescriptions such as Tamiflu or Relenza  as directed by your physician. If symptoms persist, consider requesting testing from your physician to determine whether you have influenza or another type of virus. For chronic symptoms consider seeing an otolaryngologist, or ear, nose and throat specialist. Continue to follow the protocol while being treated by your physician. If, at any time, you experience symptoms of dehydration, you should see a doctor immediately.
