Essential Oils Throat Spray for Surgery or Infection

Overview

Alleviating Sore Throats with Essential Oil Throat Spray

Author: Joshua Yorgason, MD, Debbie Gordon, RN

Across the United States, over 500,000 surgeries are performed on the throat for tonsillectomies in children alone. As an effective and often unavoidable treatment for chronic tonsil infections and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), throat surgery can be painful and difficult to recover from, especially if infection develops. Because sore throat after surgeryis common, because throat surgery can lead to infection, and because patients are often unsatisfied with standard medical treatment, there is a strong need for complementary and alternative medicine approaches for this condition.

Overview:

In this protocol, protective essential oil blend,* lemon, and melaleuca are used topically on the throat, to help reduce pain, inflammation, and bacteria present in the throat that could cause a post-operative infection. Additionally, the protocol recommends adding frankincense essential oil to help avoid and ameliorate sore throat symptoms. Sore throat sufferers make want to take additional steps, using a Monthly Migraine Focus and use other suggested products monthly to help decrease sore throat frequency and severity when experiencing post-operative sore throat.  This includes taking the Longevity Supplements daily combined with eucalyptus essential oil.

*OnGuard Essential Oil Blend (contains Wild Orange Peel, Clove Bud, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus Leaf/Stem, and Rosemary Leaf/Flower essential oils)

**Lifelong Vitality Pack

Author's Preliminary Clinical Observations

“I have personally used dōTERRA Protective Blend, Melaleuca, Lemon, and Frankincense oils with water by gargling and swallowing for a sore throat from postnasal drainage and sinus infections.  I have had some patients try  a throat spray will Melaleuca, Frankincense, Lemon and Protective Blend  after a tonsillectomy. Both children didn’t mind taking the oils and even asked for them for pain relief.  Debbie Gordon has recommended these oils also with helichrysum, and also used Bergamot in place of Lemon for sore throat to many of her clients.” –Dr. Josh Yorgason

Discussion, Article Summaries and Background Research

Essential oils such as eucalyptus, rosemary, peppermint, frankincense, and thyme are widely used in alternative medicine as analgesics due to their chemical compounds including 1,8 cineole and 1-limonene that help decrease inflammation and pain. Research has determined that monoterpines, beta-pinenes, and other plant consituents found in essential oils have exhibited analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. Studies have found that the use of essential oils for pain can also help to reduce associated symptoms including nausea, hoarseness, and cough. Essential oils have also been found to help decrease both the frequency and severity of pain, making them a viable treatment option for sore throat sufferers who have otherwise found no relief or do not wish to medicate.

Throat spray containing Eucalyptus,^ Rosemary,^ Peppermint and other essential oils showed a significant improvement in sore throat, hoarseness and cough compared to placebo.(Ben-Arye, E., et al., Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections in primary care: a randomized study using aromatic herbs. Evid Based Complement Alternat Med, 2011: p. 690346. ABSTRACT  *  PDF)

Stimulation of specific pain receptors on sensory nerves is blocked by antimigraine medication, and the same receptors are blocked by 1,8-cineole, an antiinflammatory molecule found in many essential oils including Eucalyptus (90% in Doterra E01),* Rosemary (up to 55% in Doterra E01),* Thyme (<15% in Doterra E01) and  Melaleuca (<14% in Doterra E01), which may be useful for other pain syndromes such as sore throat.(Edelmayer, R.M., et al., Activation of TRPA1 on dural afferents: a potential mechanism of headache pain. Pain, 2012. 153(9): p. 1949-58. ABSTRACT)

Monoterpines and related molecules found in Peppermint, Lavender, Frankincense and other essential oils have analgesic(pain relieving) and anti-inflammatory effects. (Peppermint has < 44% Menthol, <15% Monoterpines, <6% alpha and Beta-pinenes, <6% l-limonene, <5% 1,8 cineol in Doterra EO; Lavender has up to 24% Monoterpines, <16% Beta-ocimene, <5% d-limonene, some 1,8 – cineol in Doterra EO. (Modern Essentials. 4th ed. 2012, Spanish Fork, Utah: Abundant Health.)

Frankincense has up to 90% Monoterpenes, 43% alpha and Beta-pinenes, <22 % alpha-thujene, <7% sabinene, <5% p-cymene in Doterra EO1). (Guimarães, A.G., J.S. Quintans, and L.J. Quintans, Monoterpenes with analgesic activity--a systematic review. Phytother Res, 2013. 27(1): p. 1-15.  ABSTRACT  *  PDF)

D-limonene, found in Lemon (up to 72% in Doterra E01) has been shown to inhibit immune cells from producing inflammatory molecules.(Lappas, C.M. and N.T. Lappas, D-Limonene modulates T lymphocyte activity and viability. Cell Immunol, 2012. 279(1): p. 30-41. ABSTRACT)

Several species of Eucalyptus^ have a large amount of anti-inflammatory molecule 1,8-cineole (including Eucalyptus radiata with up to 72% 1,8-cineole in Doterra EO), and was the effective against MRSA. (Modern Essentials. 4th ed. 2012, Spanish Fork, Utah: Abundant Health; Mulyaningsih, S., et al., Antibacterial activity of essential oils from Eucalyptus and of selected components against multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogens. Pharm Biol, 2011. 49(9): p. 893-9. ABSTRACT)

1,8 cineole^ inhibits pain receptors that respond to painful cold and pungent mustard seed oil. (Takaishi, M., et al., 1,8-cineole, a TRPM8 agonist, is a novel natural antagonist of human TRPA1. Mol Pain, 2012. 8: p. 86. ABSTRACT  *  PDF)

When to seek a medical professional for treatment:

If after 2 weeks of the Self-Administered Protocol you are still having severe sore throat, or if you develop fevers and difficulty swallowing, then consider taking anti-inflammatory medication (ibuprofen, Tylenol, prescribed pain relievers, etc) or an antibiotic medication as directed by your physician. Continue to follow your protocol while being treated by your physician.
