Author’s Experience

As a licensed acupuncturist I see a great deal of chronic pain in my practice and I have been impressed at how effective essential oils are at managing even severe and/or longstanding neck and back pain. In my experience, Deep Blue Rub is a great place to start and I often recommend that other oils can be added to address particular types of pain (inflammatory, connective tissue, neurological, etc). I like Deep Blue Rub because it can be readily applied to large areas (important in the the case of back and neck pain), its benefits are long-lasting when combined with other oils, and, even when used frequently, it rarely induces skin irritation. -Kristen Horner Warren

Summary of Related Research

In a study on neck pain, marjoram, black pepper, lavender, and peppermint essential oils were shown to be effective in participants who used a cream with a 3% solution of the oils daily for four weeks. 1

A study of 12 participants determined that Boswellia serrata (Frankincense) was able to help reduce pain level and duration when compared to placebo. 2

When combined with traditional Thai massage, ginger essential oil was effective in reducing pain intensity and disability in a trial of 140 participants, 70 of which received massage alone and 70 of which received massage and ginger oil. 3

A randomized, controlled study in which one group of participants received acupoint stimulation for 8 sessions followed by acupressure with lavender essential oil for three weeks in addition to typical lower back pain care found that the group receiving the additional care had lower pain intensity, improved walking time, and greater lateral spine flexion range than the group who did not receive acupoint stimulation and acupressure with lavender oil. 4

Melaleuca leucadendron L. has exhibited both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties when fractionated with chloroform (CHCl3) and butanol (BuOH). 5

Essential fatty acids including alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) and gamma linolenic acid (GLA) were given to one of two groups receiving physical therapy for back pain over a 6-week period with the supplemented group containing 101 participants and the control group containing 102 participants. The group receiving supplementation reported improvement with paresthesia, stabbing and burning pain, and overall quality of life. 6

A study of 98 adult patients with chronic low back pain over 60 days found that supplementing with alpho-lipoic acid (ALA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) improves functionality and reduces the use of analgesics. At the beginning of the study 73.5% were using analgesics and at the end, only 8% of participants were using analgesics with pain declining after 40 days of the treatment. 7

Ginger oil possesses significant antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive properties due mainly to its chemical constituents alpha-zingiberene (31% of the total area), ar-curcumene (15.4%) and a-sesquiphellandrene (14.02%).8
